JURY
The awarding of the fellowships and the prize is decided by an independent jury of five renowned Hungarian and international professionals. The work of the jury is supported by a secretary, who has no right to vote. The award judging process is completed through a series of online and in-person private sessions conducted in English.

Gábor Gerhes
President of the jury, artist, university teacher
Visual artist awarded with the Munkácsy Mihály award, university teacher. Between 2006 and 2015 he was an external lecturer at the Media Design major of the Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design, and since 2010 he has given lectures at the Photography major of the Budapest Metropolitan University. He is a member of the Magyar Fotóművészek Szövetsége (Association of Hungarian Photographers). Since 2016, he has been the elected, full member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, Széchényi Academy. His work has been awarded in numerous ways, including by the Soros Grant, Eötvös Grant, Derkovits Grant, and the Munkácsy Award. Between 2004 and 2005, he received a creative grant from the French government for the Recollettes of Paris. In 2006, he was a fellow of the Kulturkontakt center, Vienna. In 2014, he received the main prize of AICA (International Association of Art Critics) for his exhibition titled the Neue Ordnung and presented in the Trafó Gallery. In 2014, he was included in the selection of the best 30 Hungarian photographers compiled by the magazine Kreatív (Creative). Since 1985, he has regularly showcased exhibitions: a solo one at the Ludwig Museum, and different solo or group exhibitions at the Hall of Art (Műcsarnok), the National Gallery, the Museum of Fine Arts, the Robert Capa Center of Photography, as well as many other major towns of the Hungarian countryside. His works have also been displayed abroad, including in Paris (Grand Palais, Louvre-Caroussel), Montpellier (FRAC), Brussels (BOZART), Helsinki, Bratislava, Warsaw (Palace Ujazdowsky), Bucharest, Vienna, Lisbon, London (Anthony Reynolds Gallery), Trieste, Venice (Villa Manin), Berlin (Akademie der Künste), Basel (Art Basel), Taiwan and the United States of America. His works have been purchased by the Soros Foundation in Budapest, the Ludwig Museum, the Budapest Gallery, the Hungarian National Gallery, the Museum of Fine Arts, the Hermann Ottó Museum in Miskolc and the Miskolc Gallery, the Public Foundation for Modern Art in Dunaújváros (Institute of Contemporary Art), the Hungarian Museum of Photography, the Art Gallery of Szombathely, the King Saint Stephen Museum in Székesfehérvár and the MODEM Collection in Debrecen, among others. Several of his works are owned by the Irokéz Collection and the Somlói-Spengler collection in Hungary, the H. Ringier collection and the Kunsthaus Glarus in Switzerland, the public collection of the Stiftung DZ Bank AG in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, as well as by other Hungarian and international private collections. The artist is represented by the acb Gallery in Hungary. He lives and works in Budapest and Balatonalmádi.
Lars Boering was born 1969 in Amsterdam, the Netherlands and studied Communication Science at the University of Amsterdam. From 1998 he was photo curator and later managing director of the Amsterdam Art Foundation, buying art and photography for their large collection. In 2008 Boering became an independent advisor and entrepreneur in photography and founded Lux Photo Gallery. He has advised photographers about funding and their business models, and has worked with several partners in the publishing and advertising industries. He has taught at academies throughout the world, and has been involved as advisor and curator for festivals, museums, publishing houses and other institutions. In 2010 Boering co-founded the ‘Photography masterclass Amsterdam for advanced storytelling’ where he still teaches. Boering is an experienced keynote speaker and moderator at the highest levels. As managing director of the Dutch Photographers’ association, from 2010 to 2014, Boering advised photographers on copyright issues and entrepreneurial skills. He was appointed managing director of the World Press Photo Foundation in January 2015. Lars Boering lives in Amsterdam with his wife, two sons and a daughter.

Louise Clements
Artistic Director of QUAD & Director of FORMAT International Photography Festival
Louise Clements is the Artistic Director of QUAD, a centre for contemporary art, film and new technologies in Derby UK, since 2001, and the Director of FORMAT International Photography Festival, which she founded in 2004. Additionally, as an independent curator since 1998, she has initiated commissions, publications, mass participation, and exhibitions of art, film, and photography. She is a regular juror, portfolio reviewer, workshop leader, speaker, and award nominator throughout Europe, America and Asia. Clements has served as Guest Curator for numerous international exhibitions and festivals, among them Habitat Centre and Hauz Khas BlowUp (Delhi, India); Dong Gang Photography Festival (South Korea); Dali Photography Festival (China); Noorderlicht 20/20 (Groningen, Netherlands); Photoquai Biennale (Paris); Les Rencontres Arles, Discoveries (France); Venice Biennale, EM15, and Slideluck Rome (Italy); and Photo Beijing (China). In addition to her curatorial work, she has contributed to many publications including Hijacked III, Factory and Beyond Evidence, part of the Editorial Team of RVM Magazine Italy and Archivo Magazine Portugal. She is on the advisory board of the WYNG Master Awards Hong Kong, PSC Photography MA Mentor Melbourne Australia, Camera Plus Festival Iasi Romania and the Artists Pensions Trust Global. She has served as Guest Editor and writer for publications such as OjodePez (Spain), HijackedIII (Australia), PhotoCinema (UK), 1000words, South Korean Photography Magazine and Chinese Photographers Magazine.
Oliva María Rubio holds a doctorate in History and Theory of Art from Madrid’s Autonomous University. Before becoming the Artistic Director in 2014, she was Director of Exhibitions at La Fábrica 2004–2013, General Curator of PHotoEspaña (PHE), International Festival of Photography and Visual Arts celebrated in Madrid every year (2001–2003) where she programmed around 60 exhibitions. Katalin Spengler
Art collector, professional journalist, editor
She is a founding member of the IC-Central Europe Committee of the Pompidou Center of the Musée National d’Art Moderne, Paris. Between 2015 and 2017, she was a board member of the Pompidou Photography Committee. Since 2013, she has participated in the work of Tate’s Russia and Eastern Europe Acquisitions Committee. She is president of MOME’s Consistory. She works as the professional curator of the Art-craft-design auction of the Mosoly Foundation. From 1997 until 2016, she worked at the Műértő Művészeti és Műkereskedelmi Folyóirat journal of HVG, regularly publishing articles about contemporary art and the arts market. She edited three volumes of the bilingual contemporary arts album titled The Budapest Business Journal’s Contemporary Art in Hungary. She has opened several contemporary arts and design exhibitions, and she regularly gives professional and educational lectures. She has been an arts collector since 1992.
István Virágvölgyi studied freehand drawing, desktop publishing and photography and earned a master’s degree from library and information studies at Eötvös Loránd University. He worked at Origo news portal first as photo editor and then as head of photography between 2007 and 2011 after which he joined MTI Hungarian News Agency and was the head of the photo desk until 2014. He served as deputy director for professional affairs at the Robert Capa Contemporary Photography Center until the end of 2015. He is the secretary of the Robert Capa Photography Grand Prize Hungary.
